Egg food and Hardboiled Egg? Difference

Sounds like a silly question, but what is the difference? Or is there a difference? I have LeFeber's Finch Food, but I mix it in with the hardboiled egg.

Hard boiled egg is just that a hard boiled egg. Egg food can be many things depending on who's saying it. To some it is store bought dried egg food, to others it's can mean hard boiled eggs with goodies added.
Mostly egg food is a supplement with some form of egg in it.

Also check the ingredients because some things considered "Egg Food" or called Egg Food by some don't even actually contain egg - it is just a fortified "dry" food meal product, usually corn meal being the predominant ingredient.

Most people use these dry meal products to add to fresh egg to dry it out and make it a bit more crumbly (Miracle Meal is one commonly used, then probably CeDe).

And a commercial dry eggfood that I like is Volkman's, because it actually contains some egg. It is harder to find, though, I order it online direct from the company, but it is carried by some of the websites that cater more to hookbills. They used to make a finer (smaller) mixture, but now just have the one size. I put it through my blender to grind it down smaller.

Quite true, jonvill. I don't think there is a dry commercial eggfood made that can compare with a real hardboiled egg for nutrition. I like to add the Volkman's to my mashed hardboiled eggs to dry them out a bit, while adding a little additional nutrition.

I live in Mexico and do not have access to all the "egg foods" and specialty items that most of you are accustomed to buying in the US. When I realized I was going to be a "canary grandmother", I quickly got to googling and researched what would be ideal to feed my canaries and babies that would be natural and I had access to. Here is what I do.......2 hard boiled eggs with shells (eggs from our chickens), wheat chex, oatmeal, spinach, celery, parsley, carrots, one piece of linaza multi grain bread....whoosh it in the food processor. I give nice portion twice a day with boiled seeds and I have very healthy happy babies and canary parents. They are currently on clutch 2, so I guess this formula works and it is all healthy. P.S. I do not include the eggs until ready to serve each feeding. Don't want to take a chance with germs.

Linda...did you de-rib the celery first?

I have tried every which way to make eggfoods...mine like boiled egg grated with a cheese grater and crushed egg shell.

I like the sound of your recipe...mine like carrots and romaine and won't touch spinach...picky little things!

Shantel, the Lafebers finch food is a pelleted type diet with egg in it...I serve that separately in a dish and separate dish for grated egg....if they don't finsih the grated egg I don't want to throw out the pellets that are mixed in with it. I have tried mixing ground pellets in the egg, none will touch it.

I leave the pellets down for them to go to as needed and for the young to wean out on. for adult birds they get a cup of pellets separate from seed or it is mixed into the seed.

I use the Jiffy Corn Muffin mix and add 6 eggs mix well then I add crushed egg shells, Tonic Seed (from Lady Gouldians), grated carrots sometimes grated apple and bake for 25min at 400. Once baked I break it up and put it through my grinder and its perfect. My birds love it. You can add anything you think they like. I don't worry to much about spoilage cause the eggs are baked in.

Hi Cindy! No I do not derib the celery....I cut off the ugly tough end and I use the stalk and leaves. They all love the leaves!

Note: When fed separately, my canaries do NOT like spinach either but I whoosh it in the processor because I am trying to make the healthiest food possible while they are in baby mode. They also don't like carrots but with them mixed in they have no choice but to eat what I include.

Their favorite foods other than seed, is celery, lettuce ( frilly red leaf)...talk about being picky..haha oranges, apples, mangoes. I cut nice size slices of the fruit and put it between the bars of the cage and the lettuce goes in same places. The celery stays in one long stalk and I put it between the bar sitting on a perch and they love it....go insane for it. Oh, I forgot...broccoli They must have their broccoli! Bananas are a so so item.

Side Note: I think my cavalier Maxi is losing his hearing! He is 7.5 years old and he is getting a little deaf.....bummer.

Linda, has the vet checked Maxi's ears for a wax build up deep in the canal...I was cleaning Zoe's ears but she kept scratching like something was bothering her. The vet checked deep down and it was a waxbuild up in the deepest canal...we had to use PhytoVet Ear cleaner for a a while to clear it. Those long ears and the humid days are a terrible combination.

Broccoli tops shaved are one of my birds favorites!!! I forgot about including that in the foods like like...it is the one thing they like in with or next to the grated eggs.

Cindy, he is going in for his yearly checkup and vaccines soon so I will definitely have his ears checked. I will mention your suggestion. Maxi has been very fortunate not to have ear infections, etc with his long ears and the humidity of rainy season here in Mexico.

Thanks and I would love to see photos of your canaries too! Will post new pics of the second clutch when they hatch..... I am always very nervous from egg laying to hatching to fledging!
