Crushing parrot pellets??
Ive got tons of pellets for parrots. I over bought this last time and was wondering if I could crush this up and put a bowl in the finch cages and would they eat it?
What about adding it to the boiled egg they get?

I bought a little coffee grinder in WalMart and did that!

Re: Crushing parrot pellets??
I tried a coffee grinder, and it quickly turned the pellets to powder.
Most of my finches do not eat the powdered pellets. When they eat pellets the powder falls from their mouth as they grind up the pellet and gets left behind. The powder only gets eaten when the pellets are gone, and powder is the only thing left in the food tray.
I took the advice of some on the forum and sprinkle some of the powder on their fresh egg and stir it in. That gets them to eat more of the powdered pellets they make.

I grind my pellets and add to my eggfood! I have moved up to a coffee grinder but for a long time would fill a strong baggie with half a cup at a time and go out on concrete and mash it with a hammer....my lord I am laughing as I type this, it would be like 8am and my husband would come outside "what on earth are you building this early....I smile and say, just making bird food
He rolls his eyes and laughs at me!! The things we will do to keep our birds happy ,and hopefully healthy as possible for a captive life!!

Re: Crushing parrot pellets??
I would grind it and add it to eggfood.
I had a big container of Kaytee eggfood that none of the birds liked, so I grinded it all up in to a powder and use it to dry out fresh eggfood. They love it now.

Re: Crushing parrot pellets??
Thanks Ive already started adding it to the food.Seeing how much seed is wasted Im really thinking of going with pellets as half their diet. The finch pellets are so tiny and cute compared to the giant parrot ones.

Pellet food size depends on the manufacturer.
Lafebers Finch Food is the smallest size pellets (that I know of), the size grains of sand
Zupreem XS is the next size up
Roudybush Nibbles is next up in size after Zupreem XS
I tried Zupreem Small = Parakeet size, and that was too big for all of my finches.
One thing about the Zupreem fruit flavored pellets is that it colors the poop. So you have red colored poop that will stain perches and anything porous (wood). I don't like the red poop, but unfortunately there does not seem to be an alternative in that specific size pellet. And that is what my weaned zebras eat.
My societies and zebras get a mix of Roudybush Maintenance (Nibbles) and Zupreem Fruit Flavor (XS).
