Re: really worried about finches at a store
a few years back i seen a similar situation locally, actually i was just getting back into birds after a spell of not keeping many birds, and i thought "what the heck" the prices were ok, so i went ahead and bought a pair of societies and a pair of zebra finchs that were in not to good of feather which i thought at the time was probably just due to over crowding, but they were carrying a desease that was probably caused by stress and poor management, i took care of these birds (and still have the zebras who seem ok) but the societies never really were as healthy as they should of been and i ended up keeping these birds separated permanently from my other birds. if i ever see birds kept in this type of situation i will not buy them because i have learned a lesson--my heart aches when i see things like this and if someone decides to act against this type of thing i can only applaud them.
2 society, 2 zebra, 2 spice, 2 lady gouldians, and one very much loved african grey who i converse with much.
It is a very wonderful thing indeed, when you become friends with those that wear feathers and eat seed.

Re: really worried about finches at a store
I did the same thing when I first got into finches. I bought four Society's and four Spice finches from a pet store, but they were not healthy. They have a chronic problem, which recurs every so often, so they cannot be in cages with my other, healthier, finches. Makes my bird room a little crowded with cages, but they stay healthy. I won't buy from pet stores, unless I saw something unique and rare, which is not the case most of the time. I'd still be leary of placing those finches with any others I got from breeders. I make a point to go to my local pet store regularly and get to know the staff. I talk their ears off if they let me go on
, then, when I bring up a concern about their finches, they listen fairly well. Sometimes, they just don't get it, but I notice the managers step in sometimes too. They don't want upset customers.

hi
the problem that occurs most often is they employ people who have no idea ,or no interest in the welfare and are of birds or any other animal come to that and if the only thing they are interested in is thier wages then what can you expect they will not be interested in the care and welfare of the animals they are supposed to be caring for
