need help: java finch sick, watery vent area

Post by tinysparrow » Thu Jun 28, 2012 4:12 pm

hi,
my java finch looks terrible. yesterday i noticed that she was fluffed up, so i put a heat lamp on her cage. i went to work today, and when i got home she was laying on the floor. i have transferred her to a hospital cage. can anyone tell me why her vent area is all yellow? she has a wet butt, and it looks like watery gooey poop.

she looks really bad :( she is all curled up. what can i do for her?

Oh dear - that doesn't look or sound good at all. Since it is so yellow and the discharge is watery gooey - is there any chance at all that she had an egg break inside her??? I hope not but if there is that chance if you think the yellow goo could be yolk - then she'll have to go to an avian to see if any shell remains inside... I'm sorry Amy! I hope it turns out better.

I'm sorry you lost your Java. I had a similar event about a year ago, when my rccb pair went downhill so fast, I didn't have a chance to do anything. They died within hours of finding them on the bottom of the cage. Finches hide their illness and so, now, I check the bottom of the cage for changes in droppings daily. That way, I can keep an eye out for signs of illness before the finch shows any distress. I've caught a few with wet vent early enough to treat with Baytril/Baycox, I get the two names mixed up, but at the time, I administered the one for wet vent. I've also treated finches with Ronex 12% and Amoxitex when they're ill with poor droppings and they pulled through. Again, sorry you lost her. :(

hi deborah, now that you mention it, i think that i need to purchase a few more medications to keep on hand. I will get ronex 12%, and which is the one you are recommending for wet vent? I can get that one as well :)

Sorry, I just saw your post about the medication choices. I've been swamped at home and haven't had time for FF posts. I use Baycox for wet vent or combine Ronex 12% and Amoxitex. They can get a secondary infection with a wet vent, so the Amoxitex treats for any infection.
