hi, was wondering if anyone could shed some light on my male gouldians singing.
I only have 2 gouldians (Mork & Mindy) and right now they are in a breeding cage/box.
Mork seems eager to get Mindy's attention and although he hasnt done the mating dance thingy yet, he bows first, arches up straight, fluffs up and gets all ready to sing....BUT the only thing that comes out are weird croaks. He doesn't croak at any other time and doesnt breathes funny so i cant make heads or tails why he cant sing period? The only other sound he makes are just short 'peep-peep' noises
Any ideas?

One of my gouldian males has a horrible sounding song. It sounds like he has a blown out speaker. If chicks/eggs are fostered by another species, and not removed after they are weaned, they will sometimes mimic the song of the other birds. I can't think of any species that croak, unless he was fostered by a pair of toads!

atarasi i think you might have a point there! But i've thought of a solution: i've downloaded some male gouldian birds singing and play it to my male gouldian so hopefully he can learn to mimic their song.
hopefully he'll be able to pick it up fast and catch my females attention! Poor little buddy gets the most oddest of looks from the female whenever he starts 'croaking' at her!
