I just cut branches from some of my shrubs and trees in the year.
I have actually cut some bigger ones and put them in pots of dirt and sat on the floor. I never have to cut the nails of any of my birds in the aviary. Only the ones that I buy I have to cut before turning the loose.
I also put large stones on the floor for them to stand on. This helps greatly. I think there are some types of branches that are better than others. I don't know the difference, but perhaps someone else can help you with that.

I think there is a safe list in the finch info centre.
I tend to use branches from native australian plants (mainly cos thats where I am lol) some of the types include bottlebrush, grevillea and eucalyptus
