Splendid Turquosine

Post by benavis » Fri Jul 06, 2012 3:45 pm

I'm quite disgusted. It turns out my pair of Splendid produced a male Turquosine. The female must be Turquosine. Does anyone know if the young from this mating are fertile?

Am I missing something? Why would you be disgusted? I'm not being flip, I truly don't understand.

The reason why benavis is disgusted would be the same reason I would be, its producing a hybrid.. Hybrids are usually frowned upon as they are not a pure bird line and can pollute a good gene pool. Most breeders of birds try to produce the best birds being normal or mutation but these types of birds are something different such as a mix in dogs. I do believe that they are fertile.

agree with dan, a great deal of time and effort put in to produce something that you can never breed on with. would make a good pet though. as dan says, over this way hybrids are a real big no no-as they pollute our birds gene pool.

Yup that is why I'm not happy. I'm being honest about it though so anyone buying them will know what is going on. Not sure the same thing happened to me although I guess it is difficult to tell the females especially if my female is a hybrid to start with and they are fertile. I;ve had not much luck in getting started with Splendids. Lost a male the day after I bought it. Lost a pair that had started to nest. I think I'll concentrate on finches. Don't want to figure out how much money I just said I had lost as well as the birds.
Thanks for the comments.

Hybrids are frowned on here, as well. And it is really disgusting to put out all that money and effort, only to get hybrids. Unlike the dog world, where breeders have managed to convince buyers that a 'mutt' is worth as much as a purebred, hybrids are still fairly worthless in the bird world. I've never understood why someone wouid pay $300 for a mutt when the shelters are full of them! #-o

Benavis it is very good of you to tell people the truth about the young your selling as many people wouldn't be.
Sally as for breeding hybrids I understand why alot of people do it with birds, song and or colour, but to me they aren't the best reasons. You want a funky colour bird well go down the mutation path such as many do with gouldians for example or singing, well their are plenty of good singing birds like the Canary for example. All these hybrids are good for is to look at. The Canary mule is a hybrid but also had a purpose which wasn't just for a good song, they used to use them to help trap wild birds as they were the lure because of their song. At the moment parrots would have to be ij the lead for hybrids and the reason is that they are very colourful and unique which now comes with a high $$$ value but really they are not worth the price I believe.
