Is this possible? Help with gender-Gouldians.

Post by Keiness » Mon Jul 09, 2012 10:33 am

So, I have a bit of an awkward situation I need help with. I've been talking with a lady who's selling her Gouldian's. She has a pair of blue back/Purple Breast/Black head that I was interested in at first. Then I asked if she had any yellow split blues. She said she had a female yellow back split blue/purple breast/red head that came from a male blue back/purple breast/red head and a female yellow back/purple breast/black head.

I figured that would be the pair I bought so I could get blues and pastels and yellows etc in the clutch. However, I then asked if she had any dilutes (to perhaps get two pairs) and she she had two FEMALE dilutes. What the heck? So we went back and forth on how that's not technically possible, but she bought them in ontario and that's what the breeder told her.

Now I get nervous because obviously a breeder pawned some birds off on her that were not correctly labelled. So I plugged the pairing of the yellow split blue into the genetics calculator and it said only male yellow splits would come out of it. Hmmmm. However if the pairing is reversed, it does create yellow split blue females. So maybe the breeder just mixed it up?

So she doesn't know what to tell me as she's just going on what she was told, and I don't know what to do! Go ahead and take the risk of getting the supposed yellow split blue with a blue male, or just get two blues and not have the variety I wanted in the clutches (but actually sure to get blue offspring).

This is the calculator I used:

You can see the yellow in question below. Does it seem female to you?

RH.PB.Bb male and a BH.PB.Yb hen will only give you:
RH/BH.PB.SFYellow/Blue males
RH.PB.Nb/Bb hens

If she got the YB from that pairing, the only explanation I see is that both parents were split to LB and you have a RH/BH.LB.SFYellow/Blue male which would be a "dilute" but because it is LB it will be visually Yellow.

To answer your question they OH YB in the picture does appear female. And I say take the risk and go for variety

Now i'm even more confused lol.

So the shown bird could be a hen (and the pairing was listed incorrectly) or a RH/BH.LB.SFYellow/Blue male?

The main problem obviously being I obviously want a yellow split blue to pair with a blue back. I can get a blue back male or female...but I need to figure out the sex of this yellow split to get the correct match.

Keiness, what color is the tip of the beak? If it's red it's a RH and if it's yellow it's a YH. I can't see that good in the picture but it looks red to me.

The problem I see is that if that is not the pairing that produced the yellow bird, how can you be sure it's even split to blue? Obviously the breeder has poor records or misinformation because that pairing will not give you a yellow hen.
Another possibility would be if the father was a SFYellowBlue aka "pastel" then you could get that yellow hen.
So now the question is, how much do you trust the breeders information?

This should help, I cropped the photos for a closer look.

Debbie: That's exactly what im nervous about. I figured perhaps the breeder had quoted wrong, and it was the female that was blue back and the male yellow....but it's so fishy.

Definitely RH, definitely hen, but debbie is right, you can't get a hen from the supposed parents that produced her.
Does she still have the parents? If she does and she can get you pictures of them, maybe we can determine if the father was actually Pastel Blue, not Blue.

It doesn't sound like she's all that educated on the genetics so it wouldn't necessarily be surprising if she mistook the father for blue when he was actually pastel.

Unfortunately, she wasn't born there and just told me what she was told. She just said "blue dad with red head and a yellow mom with black head". Ill see if she knows if it as a pastel blue or not.

Well, she responded as she said she thought it might have been as pastel blue from the photo she seen, but not longer has the picture.
