Gouldian: Broken beak?

Post by Sandra » Sat Jul 14, 2012 5:40 pm

Looks like my male Gouldian as a broken beak.

I've attached pictures. We can't see clearly. But the beak doesnt go straight and seems like a piece missing on each side. Like edge beak going in 'S' shape.

Any input as its broken or theres something wrong with him?

Your boy is gorgeous!! Wow. There's nothing wrong with the sides of the beak. It's just a bit overgrown. If you put in a pedi perch he should trim it down on his own but sometimes you need to do it for them. Most people use clippers to clip beaks that are overgrown but since yours is on the side you might be able to take a small nail file and file it a bit but I would be very careful with that and just try putting in a pedi perch first.
Owls, Goulds, European Goldfinch, Red Belly Siskins and Zebs... For now...

Thank you! I like the colour on him too. :o

Re beak being overgrown on the sides, that's probably why it looks like theres a broken piece. I have a "Safety Grooming Perch" on order. I had a sand perch that I had to take away because my female's foot bleed. So hopefully this Safety Grooming Perch will work better.

He is Single Factor Yellow which means he has a single yellow gene AKA "dilute".
Because the yellow gene suppresses the expression of black coloration and the green gene mutes the effects of the yellow gene any normally black area on the bird will appear grey.

Your welcome
Not sure what the breeder meant by 25% blue though, unless he means there's a 25% chance he's split to Blue. There would be no way of know if he's split unless you do test breeding's.

I was too existed about my Gouldians to properly remember what he said. Maybe he meant 1 in 4 chances of having babies with some blue.

The only way to get a Blue chick is if both parents are split to blue, for this pair your chances are more like a 6% chance of getting a blue chick. Either way they are nice looking birds, enjoy them. :)

I agree. Looks like overgrown beak on the side.
I have a hen that has this problem on one side of her beak. If I dont provide a perch where she can shave it down it will grow back.

I like the Living World pedi-perches for helping to keep beaks and toenails trimmed, and I've never had a problem with them irritating the feet. I place one by each tube waterer, so the birds land on it to get a drink, then they often swipe their beaks on this perch after drinking. But I still have to trim toenails on some species.
