New idea

Post by poohbear » Mon May 19, 2008 2:40 pm

A guy in England gave me this idea....I've tried it out today....provoked a lot of interest from the birds.I'll let you know how it turns out.I've put four in one flight.

Two wire hanging baskets wired together and packed with hay...then half dozen holes pushed into the sides.Within minutes one had over a dozen curious birds on it (Until I picked up the camera) Looks like it may be popular.

That looks like a great idea for an aviary or large flight!

Very cool....I hope the birds will take to it but not take all the grass from it....then you would have no nest...hehe! 8)

Great idea Paul, let us know how it works out. I'm sure that at least your shaftails (hecks) will try them out, they seem to like lots of grasses in their nests.

That is a good idea.

I've also seen a similar version which i plan to use next season where you make a large wire cylinder approx. 1 metre (3 feet) long and 600mm (2 feet) in diameter. Then it is stuffed full of nesting material, bracken fern, small ti-tree brush etc and hung from the roof. Poke a bunch of holes in it at varying locations and you have about 20 potential nest sites.

GREAT LOOKING NEST

I wonder if that would prevent chick tossing? What do you have on the "floor" of the nest. Could eggs or chicks FALL out? I would like to try that.

The hay is packed reasonably tight...but my birds are supplied with coconut fibre, and I would imagine the birds will take a reasonable amount into the 'ball' to make the nest to their liking.I can't see the floor of the nest being a problem.
I've only just hung 'em up,so I'll have to wait and see.

So are the finches still into the new nests? i think i want to put a few in the flight and see if they use them.
