If you have access to an animal clinic see if they will assist you using a bit of ether. Our vet uses this or a drug to end a bird's suffering. Small birds the ether is effective...they use a long tube, a cotton ball soaked in ether which is placed at one end and the birds head/beak/nostils place near the other opening. The bird goes gently to sleep. Do not attempt ether outside a vet office. This might be an alternative if you can not do this. Some vets may do this free of charge.
