Just when I thought I was getting it....????CWF???

Post by love4finches » Fri Jul 20, 2012 12:14 pm

I am going to try this post without pics. Hard to get good pics.

Paired: Male CWF (teardrops)
Female: (?) all white, no teardrops but buff colored stripping on the tale.

Babies: all white with teardrops, buff stripping on the tail.

What are the babies? Most are males cause they are singing. Are they part CWF and whites?

The female could be a pied white(i'm not sure if they have tear drops) CFW
the female IS CFW if all babies are CFW because in order to get both male and female CFW you need both parents to carry the gene.

I honestly do not know without pictures.. the female could be Pied CFW which removes the tears and tail bars or a pied white and the chicks could be CFW pied also

Regular CFWs have the buff or light gray tail bars. Sounds as if there is another mix at play with your hen. Looks like all offspring are visual CFWs and some may be split to possibly pied. Pictures help in a more positive ID .

Ok, I'm so confused between my Penguins and CWFs. I mean I'm not confusing the two. I'm not getting it at all with these two mutations.

The babies look like the mom but have the teardrops. I looked at pics at pied CWFs and you may be right but now what do I put the babies with to get a nice mutation of whatever it is. I really am confused.

I have a pic of one of the babies that I just took and hope it helps. I am horrible at taking pics, too.

You put them with other CFWs to strengthen the CFW genes in future offspring.

It also depends on what direction you want to go, do you want to keepthe lines CFW or do you want to start mixing mutations

I don't know what I would breed for if not CWF. Do you have any suggestions? I just am not knowledgeable enough to know what to do. Above is a baby. What is it?
This pic is of the mom. What is she? The dad is a straight up CWF.

I would still say pied CFW, she is so pretty! does she have any white feathers where some of the tail bars should be?

The pic shows exactly the coloring of the tale. It is CWF bars and no white where the buff colored feathers are. Hope I said that right.

I have never heard of a CWF pied. Don't know what to do with that. The baby pic, what does anyone suggest I breed them with. I have males and female exactly all looking like above baby pic.

Do you want CFWs or create something new by mixing mutations. You can add BC to get BCCFW, it may take a genertion or two to get the full black cheek patch.

Check out efinch.com. varieties then CFW to see different combinations suggestions and pictures.

You have been given wonderful advice and help. I just wanted to chime in and correct that it is:

CFW - Chestnut Flanked White

Not CWF. :)

Thank you for the correction of CFW. Still new and appreciate all lessons. You can never know it all and I love this forum for learning. You are all so knowledgeable.

Thank you also for the sugggestion of the BC. I like that. I have the bird mutations to do that. Keep you all updated.

I need another lesson. I don't ever do this but don't know the answers to the following.

1. What happens if you breed brother and sister?

2. Can you put societies in with zebras in an aviary or holding cage for when I want to use one of those birds for breeding. Do they get along? I have an aviary of zebras and got one baby society. Can that society be put in with the zebras?

1. DO NOT EVEN TRY IT. Just don't.

2. The society may be picked on, keep a close eye on him
