Adopted a Parrotlet

Hi Guys
So i abandoned my finch search for now because i got a Parrottlet! She is 3yrs old and sadly was never hand tamed or had much interaction other then just your usual bird in a cage,but it doesn't matter to me she's a sweetheart and im hoping with time and persistence maybe she'll come around to us.Right now she is okay with us talking through the cage and having our hand in there but when you go to touch her she flys away...does anyone know how i might go by slowly getting her used to me/us?
any help would be great :)

With my Grey,( I don't know if this is right ,but it worked for me)
I started slowly touching her beak, once she let me do that for a while I slowly went down to touching her stomach, stroking it slowly.
then down by her feet and kept telling her to step up.just got her use to stepping up . Then I would move her, just in her cage ,so she got use to that, then slowly out the door.
Granite, this all takes time, but with each step you will be happy that you accomplished something with them.

Some people are mean( I think) and starve the bird and let hunger Take over their fear. they will then start to eat out of your,sometimes even sit on your hand to eat. but I never liked the idea.

I used to put the cage on the living room table in front of the couch and work with her while I watched TV all nite.
I have a Pair of Canaries.I also have an Aviary(video) with a bunch of finches in it.
Red cheek Cordon blues, Owls,Star finches, Green singers,Fire Finches, Orange cheek wax bills and a lone Orange weaver.

She is so cute! Congrats, try offering treats and millet in your hand. Do not allow her to get them from anywhere (ie around her cage) or she will just be like "I can get them over there, why go to her their hand!"

Try taking the cage and setting on a table next to you with the door open, you can do this for a little while each day. Since she does not mind your hand you can hold a treating it like a millet strand. She will hopefully get use to everything new and get curious. It may take a bit of time. Parrotlets are very intelligent and curious about their surroundings. Once she feels secure she may warm up to you nicely.

I am glad you found her and are offering her a loving home. She is a lucky girl.

By the way...she is a Lucida Pacific

I did that too with Blu my Budgie. She isn't at the step up point, but she loves having her beak scratched and doesn't mind me petting her feet. Her belly she will tolerate for a bit then she moves away. It does take a while, but it is very rewarding. Especially when they start to like it. If Suko is nippy you might want to try target training her. It's another great training technique, unless your bird is like BB, my lovebird, and anything remotely like a pencil brings a burning hatred to his soul, so that when I try to reward him he attacks the millet reward too #-o

Most normal green female parrotlets have green heads no eye band. The Elucidate have the eye band and turquoise or emerald green rump. You can not breed for the mutation....it randomly happens in all color mutation of the Pacific species.

Another Lucky find! I'm so excited for you! She's beautiful. :mrgreen:

I myself just acquired a Lucida Pacific, and thanks to Cindy, she was able to confirm it. Yay! Mine is much the same, I'm thinking she was only used for breeding, I can reach I to her cage today without her tearing my hand up, and I actually got her to let me scratch her head a bit. Patience is the key I hear. Congrats again!

Thanks everyone!
Ive been sitting on a stool in front of her cage so i can put my hand in and touch her swing and hangy toys.Hoping if she gets used to that she'll eventually let me try to touch her without going to another area of her cage She doesn't mind me in there touching her things but when i get to close to her she 'flys' to a another area that im not close to,but i have lot's of patience and understand where she's coming from having not had anyone play/interact with her for so long.
I was told she was tried for breeding but was aggressive to her mate
That is awesome on her breed i thought she was a normal green Pacific,she's so sweet i can't say it enough,i now babys are cute cause you can teach them thing's when their young but Suko has something about her that i can't describe other then sweet :)
I will try the treat with my hand to,and read on everything and anything i can.will keep you posted on how she does :)

Suko is doing good.We've got her to where she'll accept some spray millet from our hand but our hand has to be wayy back from her or she spooks.
The other day she did let me reach in and swing her on her swing though :)
I try to let her out of her cage everyday to 'explore' she's well behaved and normally sits on top of her cage or waddles around the floor.
We've still been un able to touch her but are taking small steps to allow her to adjust in her own time.Me and the Hubby trade off with her so she's used to the both of us.
I have high hopes for her,you can tell she wants to interact but is still un sure...
How are you making out with your Birds,any egg's?
