What kind of toys, if any, can you put in the finches cage?

For "miscellaneous" finch-related questions.

each to their own with the use of toys in cages or not. so long as there is plenty of space for the birds to fly

I agree about the toys being a personal preference. I only gave them the hand-me-down and it's against the bars of the cage.

:?: Speaking of flying...why is so important for the finches to fly?

I know it's for the exercise. But do they, or do they not, get any benefit from hopping around on the perches? I do believe I have plenty of room in the cage since they do fly back and forth/up and down. The cage is 25" long, 22" high, 13" deep.
There's four zebras now since the two chicks came.

if they are just hopping from perch to perch then they are not really using their wings rproperly, more of a balance aid type thing with the hopping. if they have to fly even just 12" - 18" between perches they seem to eat more and I have found that the hen is less prone to egg binding when she is able to exercise better eg fly further

My strawberry finch LOVES his swing. He moves his head and gets that thing just a rockin' . It's funny to watch him.

The new orange cheek, loves the hanging toys with the string, and yanks on that like crazy. His favorite is also a mirror and turns around. He spins that thing all the time. He is just starting to venture onto the swing, but doesn't stay on it very long.

My finches have a swing in their cage, which they like to use. We also have dividers separating the two nests (they were becoming very territorial about that) and now they spend most of their time pecking at those. They like playing in the water, especially after I give them clean, warm water. And there is always the bird chase around the cage too.

I think adding toys is depended upon how many finches you have and how much room you have.

I hung a little bell from the ceiling by the top perch and the male seems to like to play with it a lot. If I'm in another room I hear the tinkling sound. There's just that and the swing. The female isn't into the playing too much. She prefers her baths. But they seem to be having a good time.

finches are like kids. years ago a friends wife's daycare burned in Oct. and she couldn't wait till the insurance paid off to reopen. some of us worked for 4 day's straight to get it opened as there were a lot of people that need a place for their children while they worked, the building was ready by that next monday, but no toys. we took 4 2x4's 8 feet long and cut them into odd shaped pieces and painted them bright colors and put them in a box. Even after she got the money to buy new toys the kids still played with the blockes the most. Go figure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! James
