which direction should I add on to the flight cage?
The flight on our porch is 7ft long and I cant go any longer but I can either build out or down.
Basically its 7long by 4ft tall and 2ft deep..I want to either make it 4ft deep( so it would be 7ftx4ftx4ft) or because its built at waist height I can build down and make it a full up and down size of 8ft(so it would be 7ft x 8ft tall x2ft).. Which would be the best for the birds?
Im leaning towards the up and down space rather then deep because I think it would be easier to build..But I want functional for the birds, thats more important.
I would do this in winter when the birds are indoors..

Finches like the flight room across (out) Width/Depth wise.
My owls and shaft tails use height, depth & length to the max...zebras stay to the top going across the cage mostly.

A flight that is 4' deep but not a walk-in might be difficult to clean/maintain. If you go 8' tall, you can always get them to utilize more of the flight by placing feed dishes, baths, etc. on the bottom, so they will go down for that, yet spend much of their roosting time at the top. If you could do both, you would have a walk-in aviary that is 7x4x8--a fabulous size with lots of versatility.

Could you post a picture....I would love to see it...it would also give us a good idea of that you are working withand allow others that are building to see different options.

Heres a pic. Its all screwed together so it would be an easy take apart.
Its funny how when I was making it, it seemed so huge. But now with the birds in it, it really is rather small..Dont laugh as its built out of bits and pieces of wood I had around..I wish I had put a small door at the top too because I cant get too the nests without opening the big door and letting birds out(the porch is screened so it acts like a catch).

So 4 ft more on the open end to make it L shaped, or on the closed side?

do you have room to extend it out and down from the section on the right or from the end of the right side?

Re: which direction should I add on to the flight cage?
I could easily extend it from the right side to make the cage another 5ft running horizontal to make a perfect L but would have to leave it 2ft deep all the way round. But I would have to put in some kind of removeable divider so I could catch the birds if necessary..That would be a fiasco trying to catch one with a bend in the cage like that.
I dont know about extending down because im afraid the dogs will scare the finches. We sit on the porch and the dogs wander around out there with us..They wouldnt purposely go after the birds but would sniff around the cage if was all the way to the ground.

wonder if you could make the divider that drops from the top or inserted through the front. Catching them in a 5 ft long flight is trying enough for me!!

Re: which direction should I add on to the flight cage?
I bet I could figure something out so I could trap them in one side or the other...
Im thinking of pulling out the diamond doves and putting them in their own cage and keeping the aviary Finch only..They all get along fine but the DD take up so much room compared to the little finches. So I need two aviarys, one for little finches and one for bigger ones and DD's...Man I can see where this hobby could get out of control really fast.

Oh, it is so easy to lose control--back room off the porch, spilled over into guest bedroom, took over guest bedroom, spilling over into dining room. My neighbor teases that he will know I've lost it when he sees me sleeping in my bed under the carport!
