Eggfood for fledglings

Post by h2olilee » Mon Aug 06, 2012 7:46 pm

I have 6 Owl fledglings that have been out of the nest for 4 days. How long should I continue to give them eggfood? I've also been offering a dry seed mix, chitted seed, a mix of fresh veggies and millet spray. Thanx!

I give my chicks unlimited eggfood until they have fully completed their first moult into their adult colours and then wean them off it.

I agree, they need the extra protein while they are still growing and maturing.

I agree with all three, I feed egg food every day till they are fully weaned and then cut back to 3 or 4 times a week.

I stop the fresh eggfood when the chicks are weaned, but all cages have a cup of commercial dried eggfood.

Hilary, what kind of dried eggfood do you use?

Ah man - I was afraid somebody was going to ask! (So I had to go check.) I use Higgins Pro-Teen 25 Nestling eggfood. I leave it in the cage as free choice, and the goulds and societies generally love it. It'* or miss with the other birds. I actually mix it with my boiled egg when making fresh eggfood as well - it helps dry it out a bit.

I use Volkman's Gourmet eggfood, but it is getting harder to find. The last time I got some, I had to order bulk from the factory in CA--shipping hurt! I also add this to my fresh eggfood to dry it while adding nutrition, and I may start using it more often for the juvies--it's certainly easier, not only for myself, but for a pet sitter.

Sally, you could email foryourbird.com (Gary) and ask if he can get it in for you. they have a sister site called bulkbirdfood.com for bigger bulk sizes. They carry Volkman

That's where I get my food (eggfood, 100lb of finch seed each month, canary, parakeet, cockatiel.... ). Their UPS ground delivery is overnight for me.
