Down owl, poor thing.

Post by cindy » Wed Aug 08, 2012 9:36 am

Last night there was a strong smell of gasoline in the air when I took my dogs out, not sure why but after wards we could hear a series of small explosions from time to time. One rattled the windows a bit, it went off while we were in bed.

I got up to check everyone and they we fine. I was half asleep and heard another boom go off, I am not sure if any went off after I went to sleep. I got up this morning and found some feathers on the floor near the owl flights, one of the little females was down on the grate. She looked pretty bad. I image she was startled. I set a heat lamp near her, she is standing and attempting to sit on perches.

Besides some NV powder what else can I do for her, not sure she has internal injuries. She is alert.

If she has injured herself in a night fright, I don't know of much you can do except quiet and a heatlamp and the NV powder, then just wait it out to see if she has signs of internal injuries. The other thing I always suspect with any hen is the chance of eggbinding.

What in the world could have been exploding like that?

I am not sure...it may have been a transformer, but the blasts sounded like more of an explosion. I have not heard anything about it as of yet. I frightened our dogs terribly as well.

Thank you Liz, it is sad to watch, her sisters and mom keep going to her. I have the brightest nightlight in the room for the owls and shaft tails. It happens, as sad as it is but it is never easy.

Thank you Sally, I examined her, she had traces of blood around the bek, she may have hit the cage bars hard. She is at peace.

I lost my best shaftail over a year ago to a lightening storm that was very intense, scared him into a fright. He broke his neck.

There are new little ones in the flight, I can hear their begging sounds. She would have had new siblings.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We are in the midst of a thunderstorm at the moment and there was this enormous boom that sounded like a bomb. I went outside and it appears it was just thunder - but it was the most intense sound of explosion I have ever experienced. All the birds just went silent and then started fluttering around.

You did all that you could do and she had a wonderful life. I think everyone here can account for the excellent care you provide for your lovely birds. It just never gets easy to lose a bird....this is a tough hobby at times. A real emotional roller coaster from time to time. Condolences to you and her mother/siblings. :(
God is my redeemer and it is through Him I have found eternal happiness. I am grateful, I am blessed, and I am truly loved. I wish all this and more for all members of our finch forum family. May you all be blessed and highly favored. <3

Cindy
Wow! I'm so sorry to hear about your owl hen. You are handling this very well, as we all grieve when we lose a finch. I know you take great care of your finches and she had the best care possible in such a situation. I agree that we have a hobby which can be up and down emotionally due to these type of situations. Again, I'm so sad to hear about the hen. :(
