Do you ever think that sometimes finches that are in an aviary just enjoy going to a cage? I have had a cage sitting in my aviary for the past week with an open door. Mostly for the two gouldians I adopted to have a place to rest if needed. It is so funny how all the other birds will go up in the cage and just sit quietly as though they are in time out.
This afternoon I looked out and there were 9 birds in the cage. 6 of them were gouldians. And they were all just sitting and no one was makinga peep.

That is so funny! Maybe if birds have been born and raised in cages, they feel like that is home, a place of comfort.

Another funny thing is they all go in there and try to eat out of the one dish of food that is in there. Although I have about three more feeding stations on the outside.
It has been too funny. I think I will need to take it out soon since the gouldians are doing so much better. But they seem to like it so much I hate to. The gouldians all sit in a row and look out the window with their back to me.

I wonder if it is like Sally said, if they were raised in a cage it gives them a feeling of safety. Like dogs, once crate trained, they view the crate as their cave of safety. My dogs still choose to sleep in their crates, especially if they are not feeling well, thats where I will find them!

I have a cage in my open aviary and had to close the doors for this reason. They like the cage...I think is because is all they know. Mine are always sitting on top of it, busy doing what they do...lol I think they loose their natuarla instincs being in cages for too long. I know most of mine could barely fly and had to learn to fly sort to speak. Now all fly well! But was odd seeing how afriad they were to fly.

The reason the cage is in there is because of the two gouldians I adopted. They could hardly fly either. I was very concerned about them at first. I left the cage open so they could retreat to it if they wanted to.
Sometimes they come out, but they always go back and they roost there every night. For now I am going to leave it there with the door open.
I don't want to stress them too much because they are molting.
It is just funny. Even tonight when I looked out there they all sat. It is getting a little late and they are going to roost.

I'd leave the cage in there, too. I rescued a Strawberry that had lived in a tiny cage for a year, and he couldn't fly. I thought he was coming around, but eventually I lost him, so if your guys want a 'safe house', that's great.

They are flying much better now. It has been a week. They still love the cage although they will come out more to eat, take a nice bath and back they go. It seems all the other gouldians like the cage too.
The purple breasted yellow back has 4 babies in an nest. He is visiting a while before going back to his babies.
I think they are coming around a bit, but still just feel safer in their cage. That is where they are roosting every night.
