Head color on Gouldian

Post by Meagan83 » Sun Aug 12, 2012 7:32 pm

This is Marco :D
He is close to a year and I have noticed for a few months now that his head feathers are 2 different colors. He completed his big boy molt months ago. What's the deal with this? :?
Does anyone else have this happen?

To me it looks like he may have just retained some of his baby feathers. I'm not sure why, but this happens often with BH birds in their first molt.. :?

Is my monitor right in that he has a yellow tipped beak, so he's genetically a Yellow Head? I tend to agree with Tiffany, next molt they should molt out.
Beautiful bird, best of luck

Yeah, he's a genetic yellow head as was his mother. I paired a yellow head male to a black head that was a genetic yellow head and all I got was more black headed genetic yellow heads. The forecaster predicts wrong in this case [-X

Your yellow headed male must be YH/BH then :)

Tiffany, I did not even think about that!!! #-o
I dream of Yellow Headed Yellowbacks, :YMDAYDREAM:
but it does not seem like it will happen at this point since Marco's momma is retired. Not many breeders I know have Yellowheads and if they do, they are always male :?

I find it interesting how you never seem to really know a Goulds genetics until you watch their offspring color in. Even if said bird is from your own line of birds, perhaps one parent was split for something and the other was not. Then the offspring may inherit something you never knew was there
