Horror Beak Problem on gouldians! :(

Post by Emma » Tue Aug 14, 2012 6:04 am

Hi all,

I am about to give this up! I dont know what to to any more.. Please Help me! :(

Is there anyone how have seen this beakproblems before??

I have been to the bird-vet here, and i beg him to take som test to se what this really is and how to treat it, but i just got the answer; he had never seen this before and they cant take any test to se what this is, and then he give me som Ivermercin ( i TOLD him i allready have tried both scatt and S76, but he didnt care ), so i go home, frustrated, with more ivermercin and a bill for 80 dollars ( for what?? ) :(

First it was on one bird, now... well.. i have 4 ( in another room ) how hasent got it.. I have tried scatt and s76, both direct on the beak and as usual for the ASM-threat, no reaction. I have also tried to take som paraffin-oil on the beak, and its a little bit of help, but its seems to come from inside, because its never dissapears totally.

The birds are healty and happy, exept for this enoying problem!

I dont know for how long the first one have this problem, but its over a year i believe, the others got the first signs about 7-4 months ago.

You are my last hope, please help.. [-o<

( Sorry for my bad English as usual.. )

It looks to me like beak rot/a fungal beak infection. I notice the first picture your hen also has a bit of a cross going on - which could be related to the fungus or it could be its own separate issue.

Generally I don't see this to be a contagious issue - meaning, I've never had it "spread" in a flock. I've had one or two birds that just developed it, though mine were both males.

The only thing I've found OTC that gets rid of this is Neem oil.
Follow the instructions on Laraine's site of how to apply it, and the ONLY BRAND I suggest you use is the following:

http://neemtreefarms.com/certified-orga ... p-232.html

Because you are international, if you can't order it, ask your vet if he can prescribe you a systemic anti-fungal like fluconazole or something like that for the birds.

Now i got answer from Laraine,

she will help me with a nutritional program and what medicin i need to use. But, unfortunatley, maybee this has been going on for to long, there is a chance i never get rid of it completely. Anyway, this will take really long time.. And i will do my best against this horror!

I will update with news when i got it. Thanks all for your help! You are my rescuing angels! O:-)

Tiffany, I have a male Gouldian with a beak rot of some sort - likely a fungal infection - and had been considering Neem Oil when I saw this thread. I ordered some and it arrived today. Of course, too soon to have used it, but thought I'd share: NEEM OIL STINKS!!!! Holy Cow! To those who haven't used it - it smells like burned garlic and sulfur. If I were a fungus, I would definitely retreat away from this stuff! :YMSICK:

Seriously - it does smell pretty bad - but isn't strong enough to permeate the house. You will, however, want to wash your hands after using it. :)

Maybe apply it with a q-tip and not touch the oil with your hands/fingers. As long as it works and gets the job done - putting up with the odour will be worth it.
