Feeding Fruits and Veggies to my Gouldians?

Post by Starfiregal92 » Fri Aug 17, 2012 2:37 pm

I'd like to give my gouldians some fruits and vegetables. Which kinds are safe for them to eat?

Hello,

I buy a coleslaw mixture from Walmart called "Rainbow Salad". I chop it up very finely, and then cut up an apple very finely. I mix the apple with dried commercial eggfood. The birds go nuts for it!

Hope that helps!

Thanks! Do you know if they would like rasberries, or blackberries? I buy them all the time for my son and thought I'd let them eat some if they are definitely safe for them.

Yes they are safe. However I find mine don't like the wetness of the berries. I use gala apples.

Be careful with apples that you don't get any apple seeds in it as the seeds themselves are poisonous to finches.

All of my finches go wild for romaine lettuce, most of them love sprouts (the kind you would get at a japanese restaurant), and alfalfa sprouts. They will dabble a little bit here and there with broccoli as well and also like chopped brussel sprouts.

Should I cook the broccoli or leave it raw?

I've always just given it to them fresh from the farmer's market, not cooked

Mine go ballistic over Romaine. They also love a fresh ear of sweet corn.

One thing about trying new foods with finches--they may not try them right away, but keep offering them. Many finches will be cautious about new foods. I'm going to move this thread to the Diet & Nutrition forum, where it might get a bit more attention.
