carrot bread

Post by maru » Sat Aug 18, 2012 11:23 pm

Hi! I have a recipe of a carrot bread that is made with eggs, rice flour, sugar, yeast, butter, boiled carrots and cinnamon. It is good. I was thinking if it could be good for my gouldians. I know carrot and eggs are good for them, and I think I remember reading that one baby bird formula is made with rice flour. So it seems it should be ok. Do you know if any of the other ingredients I mentioned is not appropiate for the birds: sugar, butter, yeast, cinnamon...? If all of them are ok, I will try it! I can give you the recipe if anyone is interested!

I wouldn't think sugar or butter could be good for finches nor yeast, but not sure on cinnamon. Cinnamon is okay for large parrots.

I agree, i don't think it would be any good for them..
I think it would make a nice birdy bread recipe though, if you took out the butter, yeast and sugar!

You could try leaving out the sugar and yeast, and substituting applesauce for the butter. You will wind up with a heavier loaf without the yeast, but for birdie bread, I would think that would be OK. The applesauce is still going to add some sugar, but I don't know if it would be too much.

If you use un-sweetened apple sauce, that should be okay - it is recommended for parrots in their birdie bread.

Ok, I will not bake them the bread, because without the butter and the yeast... I don´t know what will come out of that. Better to give them proven food. Thank you for telling me about the sugar and the butter. I didn´t know. Is this also the same with canaries? I ask because I have a friend who gives her canaries a home made bread that has sugar, wheat flour and corn oil. I think she hasn´t had any trouble with them, but anyway, if it´s not appropriate I will tell her.

Same for any small bird, tell her to remove the oil and sugar, it can make obiese birds.. You should still the recipe with out subsitutions, it may come out good for the birds!
