Azalea or not?

Has anyone had success with azaleas in their avairy?

Yes, I put them in by accident. Too much thought going into everything else. Now I have to remove them from a tight spot. I wish I could just forget the mistake and go on - help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arent azaleas poisonous to the finches. i wanted to get some but i read that it was bad. were you able to get them out yet?

Yes I did earlier today. I wonder if it's just the flower that is toxic. If so, then azaleas are bad only through the flowering period - which is only 4-6 weeks. Anyway, I think I'll try to find a tall grass to take it's place. I mainly want something for looks to add color and interest. Any ideas?

I would have thought any of the bamboos....huge variety and not usually destroyed by the birds once established.

I do have a meduim size bamboo in the corner, but it is vertical only and no room for low landings. Good idea tho.

There are also some dwarf bamboos, I believe, but I don't know the variety. I have a 4" pot of liriope in a flight cage, just to see what would happen. The birds land on it, but have not chewed on it.

i had gardenias in my last cage along with a boston fern and they seemed to like them and the gardenias hada nice scent.

I saw a hawthorn plant that looked good for the birds to sleep in at night, but that's the rub. It will take a few years to get full or high enough for some birds to go in. Then will work. That is the joy of our hobby. Trying to create a atmosphere for our birds to live that suits their fancy and ours - in that order.
