Is xenon lighting okay?

Post by diinin » Thu Aug 23, 2012 6:45 pm

My fluorescent light burned out, and I just don't want to spend $59 for the same fixture. Actually, I think the fixture is bad, because I got replacement bulbs, and they don't work.

So. At Home Depot, all of their fixtures with cords were warm light, so I bought a xenon fixture. Is that okay? I haven't opened it yet, so I can return it. I like their cage bright. That expensive fluorescent (I think from Foster & Smith) was 5500K, so I'm used to bright light.

I'm not familiar with these lights, so I did a quick search. It looks like the bulbs have a CRI of 100, which I suppose is perfect, since the higher the CRI the better--mine range from 92 to 98 CRI. But I couldn't find anything on the kelvin rating of bulbs. I usually use anything from 5500K to 6500K, preferably 6500K. What is the K rating of your bulbs? From what I read, these lights are supposed to stay cooler (a plus in my book) and last longer (another plus). I'd be interested to hear if any others have any experience with these.

I couldn't find a K rating either, which is weird, because all the fluorescents have them. They're supposed to be pretty white, I think, at least according to what the box says.

I believe that Xenon is full spectrum lighting. (At least the bulbs I did a bit of research on were) If so, they are both safe and will provide the the necessary health benefits of allowing your birds to assimilate calcium naturally. Bob
