Soak Seed

Post by L in Ontario » Sun Aug 26, 2012 12:23 am

Can soak seed be given to the finches without soaking it? I sold all my large bags of regular finch seed but still have 2 x 40 lbs bags of soak seed left. I don't want to buy more regular seed if I don't have to so I'm wondering if I can combine the un-soaked soak seed with the bit of regular finch seed until all the finches have found new homes. I'm down to only 33 finches left at this time. :-)

The one I've used (I believe it's from ABBA) specifically stated on the package not to use it without soaking. I really don't know why. Maybe something used to treat or preserve the seed that has to be rinsed off? Bob

I don't know either, Liz, as I've never fed any of the special soak seed mixes except as sprouted or chitted. You are down to 33?! Congrats, you have done very well at rehoming your birds. =D> Do you think you might keep just a few, or would that tie you down too much?

Thanks Bob and Sally - I'll contact the manufacturer - an actual farmer in southern Ontario.

No I don't think I'll keep any finch (just the parrots). I'm very pleased to be finding exceptional homes for even my oldest finches (2007).

I did email Ralph Moore and Sons (makers of Moore's and Sons seeds) and here is my email and their reply I received this morning:

Hello,
I've been using your VitaFinch Seed and Soak Seed for my finches for years. I am simply wondering if I can give them the Soak Seed without pre-soaking it.
I look forward to your response - thank you.

That is great to know Liz, I might just try giving a small dish to each cage to see if anyone prefers it over their regular seed

I was really starting to feel guilty that I had bought your last bags :( but then again.....you did tell me that you had more than enough #-o
