ant larva

Post by dfcauley » Wed May 28, 2008 4:00 pm

okay this may seem like a crazy quesiton, but I was moving some big rocks today and there was ant larva eggs under the rocks. If all the ants are removed, can I feed these eggs to my birds in a bowl and are they beneficial to them? Sorry for this crazy question, but I am doing things for these birds that I swore I never would........

I did this once, scraped off the top of an anthill and gathered up all those white things (thought they were eggs, but now I read they are pupae). Anyway, I put them in a dish and offered to my BCCBs, and they loved them! I just didn't feel like having to fight the ants every day, but you know, that is a free food. Plus we have those fire ants that sting like crazy, so I'd have to be really careful. Might be worth it, though, for BCCB babies!

Sally,
I did it last night and put it all in the freezer for about an hour. Killed all the ants and then fed to the birds. They went crazy. Love it!

When feeding ants, just stay away from the normal black sugar ants, they have no nutritional value. Termites are great as well as the ant pupae, they contain lots of protein.
