Dried Mealworms?

Post by rkn » Thu May 29, 2008 12:04 am

Do they like dried meal worms? Ok I imagine fresh is always best but can't always get that in our area without a 3 hour drive each way...so will they eat dried meal worms ok? any problems known about feeding them?

Thanks,
rkn

Well I orders some for my birds and they didn't like them. Others may have success with them. fairestfinches sells them on her website. You could order some from her and try them.

I've tried the dried mealworms as well...and my finches turned their little finch beaks up at them. I don't think any of them were touched. They prefer the live ones...I just don't like having to deal with offering live food if at all possible.

The mealworms we carry are canned. They are not dehydrated. We did not have much luck with the dehydrated and found the canned worked very well. Our birds like the canned as well as the live mealworms. The worms are cooked in the can so the natural juices are sealed in and the worms look like they're alive when you pour them out. We now have two sizes on the web site.

There are also some online dealers that will ship live mealworms with a guranteed live arrival.

After they are opened, how long are they good for? Not sure how a "bad" worm should smell! I have kept them in the fridge but threw them out after 3 days as I was not sure about them.

But remember that these are canned and not dried. There is a big difference in them. My birds will eat the canned, but not the dried.
Although..... I must admit they prefer the live ones.

birdgranna-

Canned worms will keep for about a week in the fridge with the lid snapped closed on the can.
