Improvement With The Budgies!

Post by DanteD716 » Wed Aug 22, 2012 2:22 pm

So my male budgie steps up! But he will only stay there for a few seconds and flutters off, I pick him and pet him, he does not really like but tolerates, and has never bitten..

As for breeding the male needs another 3-4 months, which is perfect because the female will then be ready in December. They love the perch going into their nestbox, but won't go in.. They only peer inside there.

Also, they are both growing their wing feathers from being clipped with no more issues, and the male hangs on the side of the cage to feed the female!

He is very large compared to her. You can deffiantly see it.. I am thinking maybe he is 50% English?

Great news on his progress, he trusts you! Is the female sweet?

Amy, they are very pretty and chatty, they are nervous if you are in the room so I have to hide to watch them! Overall I like them and their charaters, if they were a bit more tame it'd be even better.. Handfeeding the chicks should be fun. People underestimate them because they are so common but they can be as loving and talk just like larger species.

Cindy, we are getting there! And no, she is a.. meaner! She yells at me, runs and flaps, and is not afraid though, if you touch her or stick your fingers near the bar instead off running away, she comes from across the cage to get a bite!

dante, i understand what its like to have nervous birds! i have some diamond doves that were very nervous when i first got them. if i even went near their cage they would fly straight up in the air and flap their wings against the side of the cage, most of the time to the point that their wings would bleed  it has taken a year for them to calm down, and now i can easily clean their cage and even let them out to fly around from time to time :) i'm sure your budgies will also come along with time and totally learn to trust you!

I just had a good training session with the male. He stayed on my hand for longer lengths of time, everytime he fluttered off I picked him up and he did not nip, he also stepped up and chirped when I was talking to him. He did bite me when sitting in my hand, he kept doing it over and over, but he finnaly realized that little budgie bites don't hurt and stopped. He likes clinging to my shirt, and climbed to my shoulder, where he started nipping my neck. I seperated him from the girl because she is aggressive, and I think he is starting to take on her bad habits, I do not need two budgies attacking me though cage bars! He was on my shirt and I opened the new cage door and he hopped right in.

I will put them back together when my female is finished with her puberty phase, I hope she calms down afterwards. They are both starting a moult.

Thanks Dee! I am hoping the male contnues to progress, well the female still needs to calm down, she is on and off, nice at sometimes, mean at others. I think she is cage aggressive, and since she is moulting and her flight feathers and coming in, she can fly and will not be handable much longer! I know budgies do well in a small cage (their cage is like 25x18) I am gooing to build them a flight, they really like flying around, and I know they love being in flocks so I can get them a friend or two in a bigger cage.

O.K. Dante
Here is the pic of Kieko. He was less afraid tonight when I was talking with him, but he looked guarded. We'll see if I can tame him or not.

Deffinatly a boy, can you get a picture of his back?? He is atleast what'd I say 5-6 months old.

I hope you can! There is a method using a dowl for them to step up, and you reward with a piece of millet, and gradually get them used to stepping up and usingyour finger instead of a dowel.

If you aren't afraid of getting nipped, get his wings clipped and start handling him, don't rush it but start off slowly. Offer treats and food in your hand, try petting him, etc. My male tolerates me picking him up right off his perch and doesn't nip anymore.

I usually grab them right away, and try getting them to step up while they are on my hand, but I wouldn't want your daughter trying that method, as they will nip a few times.

Also if you can, move him into a larger cage, atleast 20x20, and give him natural branches and lots of toys with bells. They are like a little parrot and need to be stimulated or they wont open up

The pic was from the summer. He is now in Sonny's cgae and has her toys. I'll try to get pics of his back. He doesn't fly very well.

Ok that is good. And if you can, but don't stress getting them! I wonder why he is not a good flyer. Was he trying to fly away when your daughter caught him?

I don't know because I was not there, but she told me he was under the car and looked tired, thirsty, hungry. My guess is he escaped and doesn't fly well because he was not used to flying.
