It holds the Vegetable, Olive, Canola, etc, and the center stem of the orange is the wick.

I don't burn ANYTHING in my house. My wife used to love scented candles, but since getting the canaries, we don't burn ANYTHING in the house any longer. Supposedly, they do make a bird safe candle, but I don't trust them either. The way I see it, anything that has flame makes smoke. No matter how minute and dissipated the smoke may be, it could still find it's way into the canaries' super sensitive air sac system. Instead we use stuff like natural potpourri, herbs and those cinnamon brooms (far away from the bird cages) if we want to make the house small nice. Candles can be burnt on the back patio table or in the garage. Absolutely no smoking in the house either. Bob

I agree 100% with Bob and we don't burn anything in the house and no smoking either. Smoke of any kind can be a danger to our fids and we don't want to endanger their health.

I have stopped all candles since we got the birds. but is a candle on a candle warmer ok? no flame or smoke but does have a scent. just curious!

I have also read that air freshners are bad for birds too. What if you have them plugged into the wall in a different room?

I would not use them at all, what ever is released in one room can circulate through the air. I would not take the chance.

The above document is very interesting and discusses how a bird breaths. Included within the doucment are diagrams (that move and illustrate the breathing) and pictures.

After reading this article I have a better understanding of how different and sensitive their respiratory system is.

I wanted to add that some of the following pose a health/fatal risk to birds...burning scented candles, Glade plug ins, candle warmers with the scented candles, Frebreeze sprays, perfumes, cigarettes, Air freshners, Telfon.

Other alternatives would be boiling a cinnamon stick, orange slices and vanilla on top of the stove for a bit....smells good and very safe. It can be done in the stove in an oven safe dish as well.

On a bird forum I belonged to several years ago, two people talked of canaries dying in cars, just having been purchased at bird shows. The culprit was determined to be the little "pine tree" air fresheners hanging from the dash boards. I kid you not. Bob

My mother had a canary who died from a Glade air freshener, according to the vet at the time.
