Don't be too hard on yourself. Even with applying calcium, and warmth, the best thing is to get the Hen to the vet as soon as possible. I had one hen out of 5 (canaries and finches) that survived initial treatment. The others died as it occured at night.

So sorry to hear about Sweetpea... it's so hard to lose one, especially when you've had him/her for many years.

The babies are adorable ... Sweetpea will always live on through her babies.

So sorry to see this. She seems to be a great mother.

I think she did die at night, because she was fine at bedtime, as far as I could tell. Then, early, at 6am, I found her during the morning feed and watering. I probably could not have stopped it, as I had just returned to two back to breeding after a break. She would lay eggs constantly, almost. The last clutch, which were all DIS, was a total of seven eggs, so she was probably going through chronic egg laying this last time. She usually only laid 3-4 eggs. Thanks everyone for your comments and thoughts. I love this forum. When things go wrong, we receive such great support! =D>

Eggbinding is an especially dangerous condition for hens. Even if you get them to the Vet, it can be touch and go.
