I have no idea about your Java's beak although others may possibly have experience with this.
I just wanted to say Welcome and hello!
How old is the Java and how long has it had this condition with its beak?

Re: scaly beak problem in java finch
well i dont know the age and i have had the bird 3 months. The beak never looked quite right when i first got her. and it didnt look "bad" so i didnt worry but it looks worse now and so im worried. Tx for the welcome. oh i should mention some other things. So far none of the other birds have this kind of thing. And she is nursing 3 chicks atm. So i guess it could be contagious and slow growing or i really dont know. But i keep going to the vet and im almost always spending more money at the vet than i paid for my birds. I think i need to home remedy some of these things or i wont be able to afford any birds.

well what im figuring out is that it is likely a fungal infection and i can treat with animax if i can find some. Im doing this under the advisement of an avian vet. without actually going in to see her and paying alot of money. Gonna maybe get some tomorrow and try it for a week and see if it improves. im still open to any and all information or opinions or suggestions anyone my have.

I personally would treat the infection through the vet to see if it can be passed onto other birds either by feeding or drinking. The biggest thing is to see exactly what it is through a culture. If you don't and it can be passed it may go through your whole flock. Sine she is feeding young there are some meds that should not be used on or with chicks that are being parent fed.
One other thing you could do is email Laraine at ladygouldian.com and ask her advice, include the picture and tell her also she is feeding young at this time. She sells medications and may know what to suggest for this. If she can not then your vet is your best hope.

Hi, it may also be mites. I was given a Zebrafinch 7 or 8 months ago which was very ill, and infected with mites in his beak to the point that it is permanently deformed, and has to be regularly treated by the vet. (The person who bought it for me knew nothing about finches). Its better to get it treated early, as I can tell you, once it gets to this stage (where I got the bird) all you can do is treat it. Prevention is probably the best.

I wish you much luck.zanybirdman wrote: I'm trying the animax for a week if I don't see improvement I will vet the bird.
Where did you find the Animax?
I was recently looking for Detol(for my canary) and ended up asking the pharmacist, what was a good equivalent.
She was surprise I was gonna use it on a canary

I have a Pair of Canaries.I also have an Aviary(video) with a bunch of finches in it.

Dettol is atually an antieptic. Should never be ingested. It was actually banned in Australia, it was used to kill toads but there was a concern it would harm other living things/creatures. http://www.enotes.com/topic/Dettol
Dettol ingredients....
quote:
"Chloroxylenol makes up 4.8% of Dettol's total mixture,[2] with the rest composed of pine oil, isopropanol, castor oil soap, caramel, and water."
"Toxicity
Reduce the risk of toxic exposure by utilizing safety masks, including goggles, avoid spraying in the vicinity of people or animals, and open doors or windows to allow ventilation.
In humans
As with other manufactured household cleaners, Dettol can has the potential for causing lethal toxicity. It is poisonous when ingested, and even when it is unintentionally inhaled.
In other animals
Dettol Cleansing Floor Wipes (disposable wipes) contain benzalkonium chloride, highly toxic to fish.
Avoid external exposure to the surface of the body, or inhalation, allowing rapid entry to the bloodstream."

Antibiotics will help! My zebbie has been on another course and also has been diagnosed with a severe fungal infection of the beak. A week of intensive treatment and he;s looking much better! Best of luck for your little one.

Well I haven't checked this post in a while sorry. I did 2 weeks of the animax but I'm not sure if its totally getting better. It does look better but I don't know. I got the animax from an out of town vet that sold it to me without seeing the bird.
