We are new to this forum and I realize that anytime you discuss medications that there will most generally be those who are ready to debate. Let me first say a large part our our hobby with birds involves racing pigeons and in that world medications are needed and used frequently if you want to win - only the healthiest birds win as competition is fierce when flying for money.
If you have alot of birds and would like to treat them all easily with Moxidectin through the drinking water then the cheapest way to do that is go to your farm store and purchase Quest horse wormer in the tube and it will cost you about 10 bucks to make 8 gallons. The tube is a syringe type set up and you simply mark the plunger in 8 equally divided dosages . It is a gel and hard to mix with water so squirt your dosage into a little water in the blender and mix then pour that into your gallon container. I not only treat our racing pigeons but our Gouldians, Societies , Zebra's and Diamond Doves with no ill effects. Quest is Moxidectin and you can also purchase QUEST PLUS which will take care of tapeworm if you think you need it. Moxidectin has a fairly wide margin of safety and will not hurt youngsters if mixed correctly. I usually treat for 2 days to make sure everyone gets a good drink or two. Paul

Re: MOXIDECTIN
That's very interesting.
Scatt's dosage, which is also moxidectin, is a drop on the skin of your bird and the medicine stays in the system for 21 days so it's only one treatment. I wonder if mixing it in water makes the difference in dosage?
Thanks

Re: MOXIDECTIN
My guess is Scatt is designed for treating individual birds where as Moxidectin Plus which is sold through the Pigeon Supply houses is for flock treatment using water as the carrier. Moxidectin is not a one time purge wormer and yes it stays in the system for atleast 21 days if not more. Moxidectin is good for all worms other than tape worms and also kills external parasites with feather lice sometimes being the exception. Please understand I am not trying to persuade anyone to use the Medications that I use however there are many ways to treat problems if one does research and asks questions and sometimes they are much cheaper.
The more common problems with racing pigeons are parasites, canker, coccidiosis and ecoli and all these can be treated effectively using cheaper products from the farm supply store. Vinegar and garlic are also worthy of research and beneficial toward good health if used correctly. One thing is for sure , a bird in optimum health performs better is all aspects like breeding, longivity, athletics and so forth. Paul

Re: Moxidectin
I get liquid Moxidectin here and have used it successfully for quite some time. It is probably even easier to use than the paste. Also just use it in their water with a follow up after a few weeks.
I have not yet seen Moxidectin plus, but know the Australian finch keepers use it.
We also have the pigeon fanciers and poultry industry to thank for the availability of many finch friendly meds. I'd shudder to think what we would do if they weren't available. Probably be importing at huge expense.

Re: Moxidectin
My question is that if you use the Quest gel for horses how long can you keep the mixed solution for? If I mix a whole gallon it just goes to waste if I have to discard and can't store it.
What would be the advantage of using Quest Plus in finches instead of the plain Quest?
Thanks!
By the way I did notice that when I mixed it the first time it was very easy to overlook tiny particles of the gel that did not mix well, so you really do have to be careful to look for those transparent gel globs at the bottom, so that none of them accidentally get an overdose and that all of them get enough of the medication.

Re: Moxidectin
Ok duh, the praziquantel is for tapeworms and roundworms?
I do have a question about that, because I found another finch medicine that had moxidectin and praziquantel in it but the ratios were different than in the quest plus.
In the finch specific medicine, it was Moxidectin 1 mg/ml & Praziquantel 18.8 mg/ml,
But in quest plus it is 2% moxidectin and 12.5% praziquantel. I'm not sure how these compare. It seems like once you dilute out to get the proper concentration of moxi from botb products you are going to get a lot stronger praziquantel ftom the finch wormer than from the quest gel.
