Swiss Chard for veggies !

Post by Little Feathers » Mon Sep 24, 2012 8:15 am

We organic garden and swiss chard is a staple every year and planted just outside our back door and its actually more nutritious than even spinach. We have found that our finches just love the young tender leaves chopped finely on a cutting board and then mixed with our egg corn bread chopped just as finely. Swiss chard is very hardy plant that can be planted early in the spring and if watered lasts all summer and sometimes even through a mild winter. Sure beats feeding our birds out of the grocery store and since its picked every morning its guaranteed fresh as you can get. You could even grow chard in a large clay pot or at the edge of your flower bed. Paul

My owl finches also love chard. I put several pieces on a clip next to a perch and it's shredded up in no time. They also love collard greens, kale and mustard greens.
