Aviary model drawing - advice

Post by arnoldus » Wed Sep 26, 2012 3:27 pm

This is the model drawing I made, for an aviary I want to build in the coming days.
Image

The door will have a glass panel top and bottom and a revolving feeding station in the middle.
What other things would you recommend I add, now that I still can?

Is this going to be outside? If so, I would recommend a safety catch connected to the door. A safety catch is merely a vestibule that you can enter first, before entering the aviary. Otherwise, how will you prevent birds from escaping when you enter the aviary for maintenance? I like the idea of a revolving feed station. One of our members did that for her aviary. I'll see if I can find the link.

When you say you will use glass for the top and bottom of the door, will this be safe from being broken, say in a storm? Would plexiglass be safer? What will you have across the front, glass or mesh?

Here is the link for the aviary that had the revolving feed station. Scroll down to the second post for close-up pictures of this feature.

Thanks for the link!

This is an outside aviary. What you don't see on the drawing is how cramped my space is (inner city).
If I added a safety, I would have to make the aviary smaller, then it's almost the size of a big cage.
- However, I think it's possible to make a foldable/collapsable one with fine plastic mesh.
- I thought the birds would fly to the other side of the aviary if I was near the door.

I had regular glass in mind for the door.
The front is meshed, and will be covered with plexi in winter time to eliminate drafts. There will be heat lamps as well for that purpose.
