Some of us are fortunate to have found a reliable avian vet nearby that doesn't overcharge - most of us don't have that luxuary.

The rest of us may be frustrated having to manage on our own - so many questions with so few answers. But we can and do ask here on the Finch Forum and while members are not (avian) vets, we do offer our thoughts, comfort and empathy for any and all with birds that are not feeling well. :YMHUG: <3

the problem is really just with the vets. some are good, others are just reporting to work to do a job and take home the money. Small birds being a specialty, there are fewer opportunities to find the good vets, as there are fewer vets to choose from. I live in a very wealthy area in general, and the vets are taking advantage of that. Had another one charge us over $120 for a technician to slide the back half of a cat out of the carrier, jab the booster vaccine in, and shut the carrier door. Doc never even came in the room. Yet we paid a full visit charge, technician charge, vaccination charge, waste disposal charge, living in a wealthy area charge, need new waiting room furniture charge, want to take a vacation in the bahamas charge... And while they were very nice and had all the latest technology available there, seriously folks? And we had switched there to get away from the old crank who gave my husband trouble over putting down his 19 year old cat who had such jaw tumors her mouth had crumbled, then offered us a rescue kitten they had, sent it home with, it turns out, ear mites, giardia, something else I forget, knowing we had another cat at home, and then charged us for the medicine for BOTH cats, when THEY had given us the kitten and the diseases in the first place!

Good vets can be very hard to find, for any animal.

This may sound cruel but....after asking how much it would cost just to have a finch looked at here (4 different vets, all claiming to treat birds) average price is $60 per bird
I personally will not be bringing any in unless I notice something that seems to be going around and has to be stopped.

I have and will continue to come to my family here on the forum first for advice (trusted birders are just so much more understanding) help and sympathy if all else fails.
After all, we have discussed it here many times. Usually by the time we discover that 1 of our fids are ill, it has unfortunately gone past the time to help them.

For now though I am knocking on wood, nothing seems to be going wrong here....only losses in the last year have either been the fault of parents or unfortunately they had already lived a long life.

Good luck in the future. I've only just started keeping finches, so I don't know what their uppermost lifespan is - books say 5 - 7 years but I've lost two Zebbies - one female to eggbinding, and another male to sudden death during the night (vet is not sure what happened). My canary is 11 and going strong. I had a budgie live to 12, so cage birds can live long and healthy lives.
