Red Rumps

Post by PrettyBird » Mon Oct 08, 2012 3:09 pm

Does anyone have any red rump parakeets? I am currently considering getting a breeding pair. Male appears to be a normal, and the female might be lutino or another mutation.

What are they like? Noise level? Care etc etc.

Hi prettybird , Mick M here .
I dont keep these bird's but am led to believe that one pair per flight or cage is the best as the cock can get quite aggresive during the breeding season [-X , especially toward's his own sons when they fledge . :( If you do decide to purchase a pair I hope they behave well for you . Google them and im sure you'll find loads of info .
I keep and breed cockatiel's and Fischer's lovebird's so have some knowledge of hookbill's . Mentioned I was thinking of getting a pair and one buddy put me off purely because of the issues i mentioned above  . Getting a pair of Rosa Bourke's instead :-BD Happy days .

I owned a pair and housed them by themselves. Mine were hand tamed and the male whistled tunes and talked a tiny bit. I had bourkes and scarlets...bourkes, a better choice for aviary.

Thanks. Yeah I read that as well. Thats the only thing that puts me off. BUT they wouldnt be in an aviary, and they wouldnt be interacting with my other birds. So I guess that issue wouldnt be bothersome. Its the possibility of them fighting with their young.

Not many people have them here (that I know of) so I thought this would be a good opprotunity. But, on the other hand, maybe thats why not many people have them as pets... #-O

Decisions, decisions....

Prettybirds I did have red rumps at one stage my parrot phase, they are easy to care for, a cockateil mix will be fine, fruits and veg , greens and if at all possible soaked seeds, Green seeds or sprouts when in breeding mode. A deep nest box something like a cockateils but larger with wood shavings and fine twigs placed on the bottom. As for noise well they are a mid sized parrot and the noise is loud at times but its not always mainly at the start of day and end of day as well at feed times. They love to wash but the only way I coyle get them to wash was on wet gum leaves or in the rain. They are a bird which you can have only a single pair in a flight, and you could add if room was available a second pair of another bird such as a rosella, this always the correct way but I have seen it work. Most breeders will remove the young once independent as they are worried that the paturn on young. They are a wonderful start to larger parrots than budgies, not to hard to care for and they coke in many colours other than normals.
