What fun do your finches give you?

Post by Laura » Sun Jun 22, 2008 6:04 pm

I've been dreaming of getting finches, and I might soon! But my brother thinks that they're boring, and I want to show him that they aren't. (My mom doesn't want to get us pets that we won't enjoy...)

How are your finches fun to take care of? Do they make you laugh everyday? Or are they boring?

As long as you aren't bored thats all that matters...I find birdkeeping fascinating...not exactly fun...but very entertaining.
All of us have different ideas about entertainment...I personally get bored to tears with sport...The thought of our lot in the UK spending about 10 billion pounds on the London Olympics so folks can run around a lot and win medals for chucking things is incomprehensible to me....But, each to their own... :D

Haha, I like your humor Paul!
I don't find birds to be boring, as we used to have parakeets in the past, but my brother does! He likes hamsters though...

In your personal opinion, which are funner? Hamsters or birds?

Laura you will find that Paul has quite a sense of humor and it can go either way. He keeps us all quite entertained with it.

I also find the finches fascinating. I have an aviary built on my front porch. We enclosed it and made a sunroom. I have about 26 birds in there of different species. I find myself constantly going to either the window or the door and watching them. Sometimes I cannot get the things done that I need to for watching them. I know their personalities, where they each roost at night, who sleeps in nest and who doesn't. They are always doing something funny out there that I will have to call my husband over to look. They are either destroying my trees or dragging around white feathers or bathing in their community bath.

Having them sometimes is a mixture of sorrow and happiness that they bring. If I loose one, I sometimes cry. I know they are just little birds, but I feel a responsibility for their well being. After all we are the ones who cage them and keep them in captivity.

But at Paul says.... to each his own.

Keeping finches is the best! Espcially zebs. I watch them everyday and find they get quirky personalities and do very funny things.

At times it can be stressful when they fight or they have to moved to another cage. I suck at catching them! But the positives far outwiegh the negatives.

If you breed its a wonderful experience I rememeber when my first batch of babies hacthed I was so excited! Watching them hatch and grow is a wonderful thing to experience. I wouldnt have anything else!

Boys always like hamsters, don't they? Personally, I love finches. They are not going to interact with you like a parakeet will, but I never tire of watching them.

Donna, I love how you know each of them by heart. That made me smile so much :) .

Sarah, I can understand how you feel about the babies! But I don't think I'll breed yet..I've never owned finches before and don't want to risk any.

Sally, yes, yes they do! But I do love watching finches, even though I can only watch them in the pet store..I haven't gotten any of my own yet, but I cannot wait!

jamezyboo21, thank you! And I can't believe you had 300 at one time!
