Egg Food advice

Post by Starfighterace » Wed Oct 31, 2012 12:54 pm

After a 8 year break, I'm back in the Finch Hobby. My birds (4 EGFs, 2 CFW Zebras, and 2 Chinese Quail) do not like the Egg Food I am offering. I used "Feast" in the past, and all of the birds (canaries, zebras, societies, sliver bills, tri-colored nuns, EGFs) clung against the front of the cage while I prepaired it for them daily. They wolfed it down as soon as I put it in the cage.

These guys have refused to eat any of the egg food I have offered- wet or dry. I tried the "Feast" replacement, and no joy. Switched to Abba's Egg Food and it gets ignored wet or dry. I tried CeeDee and Higgens in the past and had similar results. Birds rarely touch it.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Welcome to the forum!
Have you tried offering them just plain hard boiled egg? You can mash or grate it up. Some members use a cheese grater, so the pieces look like little worms, and have good luck with this method. You can add dry ingredients, like corn meal or handfeeding formula, if you want to dry it out a bit. Then, you can gradually add things, like grated veggies, as they get less afraid of it.

Would love to see photos of your birds!!

Welcome to the forum =D> =D>
Definitely start with the hard boiled egg's , some breadcrumb's or biscuit mixed in , I have also added some CeDe eggfood to this and some take it .
Are your bird's of a breeding age , are you spoiling them with other tit bits , perhap's their diet is sufficient already . Id be surprised if the hen's dont take some .

Welcome to the forum. :)
I would also try just plain hard boiled eggs, I add a bit of hand feeding formula to make it crumbly but anything along those lines will work well, just try not to add things that would lower the protein level.
good luck

Well I boiled up an egg, mixed in some of the dry egg food to absorb the extra moisture and the Zebras and Quail finches seem to like it. EGFs are still skittish, so I'll have to wait and see if they try some.

I like to offer them a varity of foods, just like we like to eat. But i don't want to waste what I have either. I was suprised when the guys stuck up their noses at egg food- dry or moist. I guess formulas change. Hopefully the fresh egg will get them hooked.

Thanks guys!

I'll take some phots when I get a chance. Been a busy boy the past few weeks.Between Hurricanses, business trips, and just getting ready for winter has kept me busy. Hopefylly in the next few days.

Great news! Glad they seem to like it, keep offering and eventually everyone should eat it willingly.
Can't wait for pictures :)
