Colonel Mustard is closing his eye a lot...

Post by societyspice » Mon Jun 30, 2008 8:08 pm

This afternoon, I noticed that my spice finch is closing his left eye. He doesn't keep it closed all the time, but he is blinking a lot and he will close it for maybe two or three seconds at a time. Other than his eye, he appears and acts normal. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing his eye irritation and is there anything I can do to help him? Do you think he simply got some debris in it? I did recently add some orchid grass to their cage to eat and play with, so I don't know if maybe dust from that might have caused this.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Many animals, including birds, have a third eye lid. He may have got it irritated nontheless. Is there a discharge around the eye? Blinking in finches is also a sign of dehydration.

Well, he must have just had a minor irritation, because he seems/acts fine now. I didn't realize that birds had a third eyelid or that blinking can also be a sign of dehydration, so thanks for the info!
