Help! My female zebra finch.....
HI finch lovers,
Pls help! Something is wrong w/ my female zebra finch. I have her almost 4 years. 2 days ago, I noticed her droppings sticked to her butt and I didn't pay that much attention. But it seemed to get bigger so I caught her today and removed it this morning.
Then when I came home from work, I noticed that she cries out w/ loud squeeky sound.... I never heard of her doing so. And her voice tone changed. She shaked her head and threw up a little bit of seeds and like water (more sticky like saliva). That happened once a long time ago but she got better immediately but this time, that squeeky sound and her changed tone of voice freak me out. She's sleeping right now and I'm calling the vet tomorrow morning to take her. But in the mean time, does anyone have any idea what's wrong w/ her?

Gosh, I am so sorry. I wish I could have some advice for you.
Is this the only bird in the cage? Are any others showing signs?
I am not sure of the life span, but if you had it 4 years do you know how old it was when you bought it?
I would suggest giving it some NV or Guardian Angel in its water. Do you have any of this? Also some millet sprays are easier to eat.
Please keep us posted and sorry I could not be of more help.

Thank you for your kind words! I was next to the cage all day today to observe her and even didn't eat for myself at all..... She's not tamed at all but she seemed to feel safer if I was in her sight.
There are 8 zebra finches in the cage. She's the mom. Her husband was always next to her and comforted her.... it was such a heart felt scene. Others are completely fine. She's the only one who is sick. I know that she's kinda sensitive to cold weather. It has been hot here but I live closer to the beach so maybe the wind was kinda chilly. (I bring the cage out during the day in the balcony).
I got her on my birthday 4 years ago from the pet shop nearby. I have no idea how old exactly she is. I don't have any NV or Guardian Angel. I have Calcium Plus only.... but it says best if used by Sep/2007.... does that mean I can still use it or not?
I thought she was getting better (she was eating, drinking, preeing, sun bathing all day) even though she still cries "Gii, Gii, Gii!" like a goose and shakes her head. I was gonna take her to the vet today but they told me the specialist won't come in today but tomorrow. I thought she was getting better and didn't wanna add more stress to catch her and take her to the vet so I decided I would take her there tomorrow.
But around 7 p.m., her cries were more often and she threw up again. And she opens and closes her beak for like 15 seconds. It seems like she's having hard time breathing or digesting. I called the vet again and receptionist told me the specialist would be busy all day tomorrow for surgery, but I'll bring her anyway. I hope whoever sees her can help her..... I'm broken hearted.

The cage is pretty big. it's almost 72 long x 30 high x 30 wide.
I took her to the emergency care unit. The vet over there couldn't figure out exactly what was wrong w/ her..... I asked her if she could give her anti-biotics and I wanted to take her home (I heard dogs crying and all....and it wasn't dark enough for her). The vet told me she almost died from stress but it was better to keep her w/ oxygen, heat, and antibiotics there. Then I have to call another animal hospital which may have more knowledgeable vet for birds, but I doubt it. I couldn't wait at the hospital so I left, but couldn't sleep at all.
Only I can do now is to wait for another hospital to call me back. Her mate hasn't sang this morning, and he seems to look for his mate.....

I hope you do not think that I am being unsympathetic, but zebras do not live forever. Believe me I have cried over the loss of birds also.
I hate to see you spend so much at a vet and then it dies anyway.
Hopefully they can find out what is wrong with her and it won't be tooooo
much of an expense for you. I am not saying that we shouldn't take them to the bet when needed, I just know some will take davantage of our loyalty and concern for our pets. Please keep us posted.

NO, I do appreciate your concern. It makes me feel better even just you responding me always. SO thanks!
As you expected, unfortunately, she passed away an hour ago at the vet. I transfered her from ICU at the emergency hospital to another animal hospital. The vet there told me that she had a tumor at her neck.
But, I don't know if I did things right for her cuz.... she was so scared getting injections and kept being at a place where she could hear other animals howling. I really wanted to take her home after getting some med even if she was meant to die. Her droppings were actually becoming more normal and she was eating quite a lot.
Yes, I paid a lot of money ($400 for emergency hospital and almost $300 for another vet) but money wasn't issue.... I just wanted to get some med that could sooth her better.
I'm so full of sadness right now. Her mate still calls her and goes to one perch to another one to look for her. He was so good to her even til the last moment they were together, he was preening her, warming her, protecting her from others, letting her head to his chest and singing for her constantly.
Anyway, thanks so much for your kind words and support! I just bought a flower that reminds me of her, and will bury her in that flower pot so that she can stay w/ us always.
