Donna, if you can get your husband to do it, you can set up a mealworm farm in one of those 3-drawer plastic storage carts like Wal-Mart sells. Not the wide ones, the ones that are about 14-15" wide. There are some places that tell how to raise them, if you are interested, I will look them up for you.

Seriously, raising mealies is super easy. I still have to buy when I have somebody nesting - my farm can't keep up - but I have enough for regular day-to-day demand. Now that it's summer a lot of places won't ship because of the heat, so keep that in mind.

The last shipment I got they told me they needed to ship fed ex2nd because of the heat and they couldn't guarentee live delivery, if I shipped regular ups but ,Fedx2nd the mealworms came in fine very few dead.Fed ex 2nd cost more but I think its worth it.
My goulds sit on the mealworm cup and look sad till I give them more mealworms [can't resist]

mealworm shortage

Post by sean » Tue Sep 09, 2008 7:13 pm

this reply is a little belated, but i was told by my local mom & pop pet shop owner that a virus had wiped out many of the mealworm colonies and that is the reason they were hard to find in the middle of the summer.

I have heard several different reasons but they all seem to have them available know.
I just got A new shipment this past Friday and happy to say they were in great condition this time. I ship FED X 2 nd day
I tried something different with this order I picked them up at the FED X terminal they called when they got the shipment, I only live a few miles from them. But when it goes on there truck it took them about 5 hours to deliver to my house on the trucks normal route I think thats where they got so hot and die

I have just ordered for the second time from Grubco but they are holding my newest order due to heat. I really need them though because I have some bccb eggs about to hatch.

Donna
Did you have them ship 2nd day fed x check where the fed x is and see if you can pick up there it saves A lot of time keeps mealworms from being in the delivery truck in my case it was almost 5 hrs.
the order I got the last of august was all dead thats why i picked up at the fed x this order with no dead loss at all good luck
