Re: Cat got to my Gouldian male
I hope he feels better soon hun.
I have had a similar type of accident in the past. I must say that I agree, the best thing for him right now would be electrolytes, heat and quiet.

Re: Cat got to my Gouldian male
He is declining... now breading heavily. Not sure if due of separating the cage but I felt he would be safer on his own. I couldnt find anything 'clear' to separate cage so they can't see each other now.
He has treats and water on his side, where he doesnt have to move to get to it.
This is the best I can do for now.

Looks perfect. Hope he does well. Love the cage. Does it help keep mess down?

I have a bird feed hopper, right there it help a lot with keeping clean. Cage is also great for keeping messes inside. The millet i leave it at bottom of the cage so i basically have a clean leaving room. to clean cage is super easy, i just unclip bottom and thats it. Love it.

Re: Cat got to my Gouldian male
Sorry to hear about your L. Gouldian, if you have a heating pad you can put it under the cage on low or med. heat (not to cover the whole bottom of the cage so he can get off and on the heat as needed), I put a thick book under the heating pad to protect my furniture, check to make sure it isn't too hot with your hand after it has time to warm up, cover the cage on three sides and half way down the forth side so he can get light and some of the heat will stay in. Set him on the heat at first then he will move off of it if he wants too.
I give my birds Gatorade diluted with a little water it has Electrolytes in it, I buy the orange or strawberry flavor they like the taste. Put it in a small lid like the Gatorade lid so he can reach it.
I also give my birds hulled millet from the grocey store you buy for cooking that why he doesn't have to work so hard at hulling the seeds, still give him millet spray and the seeds he likes to eat on the bottom of the cage with him... Hope it gets well fast...

Re: Cat got to my Gouldian male
It looks like he's already making good use of the lamp. I would think that a 60 watt bulb at that distance would be fine. Do you have a room thermometer to see if the heated area is around 80 to 95 degrees F? Also, if you can't quickly get a hold of antibiotics, I would at least offer the electrolyte solution the others have mentioned. A 500 mcg sublingual B12 dissolved in 8 oz water (or the electrolyte solution) wouldn't hurt either. Bob

Re: Cat got to my Gouldian male
Grrr, I'm hoping he makes it. So as long as the cat didn't puncture an organ from that wound under his wing, I'd think he'd be OK. I'm sure it's mostly the trauma that's keeping him down, though. Hopefully.

Re: Cat got to my Gouldian male
I would give maybe a table spoon per gallon. Or maybe about 1/3 gatorade with the rest. I have heard of it working but have not personally tried it. I hope he gets well soon

Re: Cat got to my Gouldian male
Is there a time period after trauma where the finche's life is in danger?
He's adorable, he goes to my hand knowing he will be put on his high up perch.
Here's a cute pic. They miss each other. Got a pic of them peeking at each other between the gaps.

Re: Cat got to my Gouldian male
I am so so sorry for your loss. The little one looked so sweet:(. Unfortunately cats are very dangerous around birds.
Last year I rescued a pigeon from a cat's claws in the street, he seemed just dizzy, did not have any aparent damage but I noticed that one of his pupils was larger on one side. I took him home, put him in a crate with a big towel in the kitchen, he ate some bread and drank water, I even showed him to my zebras who landed on the crate siging to him, but over night he died, I heard him flapping his wings while he was passing away in the middle of the night... He died in my arms poor little thing. I guess the cat's claws might have caused him some brain injury, maybe the same happened to your little one since he could not keep his balance.
It is always so hard to lose an innocent soul like the winged babies.
