Aviary from an Armoire?
I spotted this awesum armoire on CL. It's got a distressed beachy look. I wanted some opinions on covering the slats and openings from the inside with suitable cage wire and leaving the doors on to leave open or closed for bedtime or what ever. I would need to frame out some doors on the front and maybe on the back open part? Am I nuts? It's only $80 and I'm sure I could get it for less.
Thank You!
Thank You!

VERY nice. Certainly doeable. You could take out the floor & the bottom of the drawers would be the bottom; you'd pull them out to clean them.
Put plexiglass sheets on the lower portion to reduce mess. Looks exciting to do.

I can't wait to see how this turns out!

In the degu-keeping world (degus are sort of like mini-chinchillas), people convert furniture into all kinds of amazing cages and habitats. I think this will be just beautiful when done.

Re: Aviary from an Armoire?
I have converted an armoire to a cage before. It worked out very well, but it had some drawbacks.
One was that the sides were solid wood, so less light got in and visibility wasn't good. (Not ideal for viewing pretty birds.) I like how this one has the open sides. But if it were mine, I would remove all those wooden slats, and use wire all around the top, and plexiglass around the bottom.
I like the idea given about using the bottom drawer as a pull out tray!
I see it has shelves, which might be adjustable? If so, you could use it as a three level breeding cage, when needed, or convert it back to a flight. Very flexible! And it's easy to have Lowe's or wherever cut new pieces of plywood for the shelf-floors, if the current ones aren't suitable.
Seems like it has endless creative possibilities! I doubt that all told it would be cheaper than a ready made cage, but it would certainly have character and charm.

Re: Aviary from an Armoire?
It looks great and if I were you I would go for it!
I agree with Finnie and would remove some if not all the slats as to me it would hinder you seeing the birds. The drawer idea is great so that should be on the to-do list as well.
I hope you do it as would love to see the results.
