SCATT question

Post by danaday » Mon Jan 21, 2013 1:24 pm

Hi everyone

I am wondering if I can apply SCATT on gouldians that are molting and juveniles? I haven't ever used it before. I'm still pretty new (6 months), to gouldians but definitely learning and understanding more about them. I want to take a precautionary step so they don't get air sac mites. I'm sure none of the birds I have dont have mites. But the more I read up on it the more paranoid I get. And I will be getting new birds so I want to be safe than sorry. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks in advance everyone.

I would not use SCATT as it is quite strong, especially for young finches. I use Iverlux in the water for juvies or S76.

I use SCATT only for incoming birds (not breeding) as part of my quarantine process.

S76 or similar can be given to breeding birds, if needed. Or when you need to do a whole cage/flock, as it is easier than catching each bird and administering SCATT.

Thanks for the info and advice. My gouldians are no longer in breeding mode. So I might apply it to just the parents. And I will use it for new birds. Thanks again for the help. :)

If I remember correctly Scatt is safe to use on birds older than 6months old. But you will have to confirm this.

However even in so saying - as your birds are moulting, if it were me I'd rather wait till they complete their moult and then apply treatment. Too much goes on with birds when they moult and their bodies are in enough stress without having to add to it with meds.

Air Sac Mite treatment will not prevent ASM it will only kill any mites the bird has. S76 only remains active for 7 to 8 hours while Scatt is active for 21 days, that's why S76 needs to be administered 2 days for 3 weeks.
Scatt can be applied to chicks over 6 months.
If your birds are molting I would wait to treat like Monotwine suggests, after all your not treating because they are suffering from ASM so there is no urgency.
