Post by Carartist127 » Thu Jan 31, 2013 6:29 pm

Hello, I just joined lately. All your posts are so helpful, and thankyou.I am a newbie at finches.I recently got the scalex spray for my pair of Gouldians and a star finch who seem to have the mites. But I sprayed them on Monday, and I was wondering , they are still coughing alot and wiping their beaks..it says to spray again in 10 days.Should i definately wait, or spray them again....Thankyou for any help..... I haven't used Scalex spray, but I think it is for external mites. If your birds are coughing and wiping their beaks, and you think they have mites, that would be air sac mites, which are internal. For air sac mites, you need something like Scatt or S76 or Iverlux. But be certain you think it is asm before you treat, as other respiratory problems can cause coughing, and birds normally wipe their beaks on perches, etc, a lot.

Thankyou so much!Actually here in Ontario is sold under the name Scalex...I don't know why...it is confusing if I go to Detroit or Buffalo for it, it is under another name....but recently i can get it from a pet shop finch breeder now....it may be illegal to get here but since he is a breeder he must be able to get it for his birds....

I have another question too, I noticed in the last hour my female gouldian is sitting on the perch with her head tilted back, is this because she is trying to breath better(and is she getting worse do you think)...thankyou (The male is sleeping with his head turned and buried) and the star finch is just sitting not fluffy but quiet...

Scalex is NOT for Air Sac Mites, no spray will control ASM. You will need something with ivermectin or Moxydectin in it. The type of medication for ASM is either applied directly to the skin of the bird or in their drinking water.

You may have a respiratory infection going through your flock and not ASM. Are there any other symptoms other then coughing and beak wiping? What does their poop look like? Any eye or nose discharge?

I would add a heat lamp as soon as you could and reassess their symptoms.

If it's not specifically for birds I wouldn't know if the strength was the same or not so I wouldn't even guess to a dosage, sorry.
Being in the States I'm not sure what you have available to you.
Hope someone else in your area can direct you to a supplier for what you need.
good luck
