New glass front aviary for parrot finches
This is what I got for Xmas. A homemade glass front flight with a pair of red throated parrot finches. (seagreen hen and split cock).
Hubby made it using the glass from an old coffee table. You cam still see the last of the blue masking tape we put on the glass surface to show them that they cant fly into it. For the first week i also had glad wrap on there too. Havent had a problem yet, and leave a night light on too.
I used aquarium backing film as the background. There's a few of my orchids in there too.
They already have a nest going but no eggs yet. Shouldn't be long, hopefully.

Interesting.. did you decide on glass front for viewing pleasure, cleanliness, or to keep dogs from nibbling bird toes

For viewing. Also because it was hubby's project and that's what he chose to do. It does have a slide out food draw, plus the whole bottom plate comes out. It's not perfect but it functions pretty well. I have to pull the plants out every couple of weeks to clean the poop off.

Re: New glass front aviary for parrot finches
Thanks!
When I bought these two they had been in a regular breeder cage and were going through a severe molt. They looked quite shabby. For the first week in their new 4x4x2 cage with plants, they were obviously in an alien world!! Funny, but sad. They were so unfit they couldn't fly and just getting to their food and water took some practice. Now they buzz around in typical PF fashion. Plus the sea green hen's head color is more strongly pigmented since she arrived (and finished her molt) due I think to the better diet and fresh greens and sprouted seed.

Re: New glass front aviary for parrot finches
Beautiful aviary! Those Parrot finches really need the extra room to keep from getting fat, so all the exercise will benefit them. Congrats on the first egg, and looking for many more!
