She is doing well! Whatever was on her beak seems to be slowly clearing up and her leg is getting better. She is out in the sun at the moment pecking at some millet so its looking good! Will keep her progress updated :D

I have been closely monitoring my sick hen. She is chirping to her mate and her leg as far as I can tell is getting better but I am not sure about her breathing? She seems to be breathing quite rapidly but when I compare her breathing to her mate it is very much the same? How can I tell if her breathing is compromised? She is not open mouth breathing at all.

Thought I would update this post with the outcome of my sick little painted finch.

After taking off the growth with a scalpel and after two doses of Ivermectin (Ivomec cattle diluted by a vet friend with Propylene Glycol) and with 1 month of recovery and transfer into the larger aviary she is almost fully recovered. Her leg also has completed mended (apart from one crooked toe which I dont think will correct itself ever). She is actually growing her feathers back on her head where the growth was growing and her beak is slowing turning black again!!!!!

Just thought I would share her recovery!

Thanks everyone for their posts!!!

thats great news.
if you plan to breed your painteds I have found that they prefer a mid height wicker basket style nest. by mid height I mean approx 4' off the aviary floor
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

I actually saw her eyeing off a nesting spot this morning, she was hopping in and out of it. Fingers crossed.... but to tell you the truth I am just happy she is alive!!!
