Hi, I recently received a male and female Zebra Finch pair for Valentines Day this year. I've been searching all over the internet for what "normal" zebra finch behaviour would be - but I can't find anything.
They constantly jump from perch to perch and chirp all day, letting out loud, squawking sounds every 20 minutes or so. Is this normal?
Also, I was wondering how I should set up the cage inside. Whether it makes a difference where each item is located and if they need some sort of hiding place. Should I get them a nest too?
Thanks,
All help and suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! The first place to get information is at the Finch Information Center, linked at left. There are dozens of articles on finch care, housing, etc., and under the Species section, you will find specific information about Zebra finches.
And yes, it is normal for them to jump back and forth all day. Finches are active birds, some species more so than others. Also, if you give them a nest, that triggers their breeding behavior, so if you don't want babies, don't give them a nest. Have fun reading!

Welcome Beagle! I had to chuckle at your description of your Zebra's behavior. I am new to this too but quickly catching on thanks to this forum of wonderful people. When I brought my zebra pair home in early January, they were more jumpy and loud then normal. Just a bit nervous I suspect.
I purchased a nest a few days later and as things settled in to place, they laid six eggs and have hatched three chicks which are due to fledge in about a week or less. My mom raised finches when I was a little girl so I wasn't caught off guard by the noise or energy, but I have been caught off guard about TONS of others things.
I suggest you read read read as much as you can here and don't be afraid to ask questions. I've learned there aren't any dumb questions and everyone here is extremely kind and knowledgable.
Good luck and have fun!

Hi and welcome...as a zebra breeder I can assure you they behaving very Zebra-like!!
This site to is very helpful regarding zebra care... http://www.efinch.com/species/bfzeb.htm
What mutations do you have? As far as nest I would onl give them nests if you want them to breed and breed they will!!!! The perch set up is good across the cage at different levels. a swing and a bath would be good!!
