Question About Putting Birdfeeders In Aviary

Post by SFincher » Sat Mar 09, 2013 1:43 pm

I'm in the process of putting together an indoor aviary. Some of you know about this. Anyway, I've been holding onto this one birdfeeder. It's octogonal, maybe a foot across, about a foot tall. Clear tube in the center for the food. Was thinking of using it as the finches' food bowl/dish. It's about level with the lowest perches I installed, so it won't obstruct their flight space from the perches up. There's room to fly around it if they'd fly from the aviary floor. I'd like to use it because it's been sittin around for the past year or two and I haven't wanted to give it up. So if I use it, how much food should I put in it? Enough to fill the tube or enough to cover the floor of the birdfeeder? Any help highly appreciated. Brw, a likeness of the birdfeeder I have is below, only mines a little more worn and missing the decoration and the pitched roof. There's a flat secondary roof on mine though and the tube is sticking up through, but can cover that no problem.

Just cover the tube on top, and you only need to fill the tube. They'll scatter it out on the floor of the feeder by themselves & pick through what they want.

I had two like this I used in my aviary. One was a bit larger than the other. The birds used it just fine, but they pooped all over the top and picked and scattered most of the seed on the floor. Needless to say, the feeders now hang in my outside trees for the wild birds.

Thanks Finch & Puk. Wasn't sure what anyone would think about putting a feeder like that in an aviary. I really like it and haven't seen any as elaborate as that one. Most I can do is try it out and see how it does for the finches. Thanks again for your thoughts.

I use one similar in my aviary and it works fine. You should cover the top of the tube though so they can only get seed out through the bottom like they are supposed to. I would fill the tube with seed just like it was designed to do.

Will do, Debbie. Thanks. I was just afraid they'd soil some of the extra bird seed or poop in the birdfeeder. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks again. have a good weekend.
