Waterproofing

Post by Geordie » Sat Aug 02, 2008 12:14 am

Hello all,

Do birds ever have problems with their oil glands? Raff these days seems to be getting soaked to the skin every time he takes a bath, before he would get a bit wet the same as Riff but I was thinking that his oil gland might not be producing enough oil for him to coat his feathers...apart from that he appears perfectly healthy and normal, going about his business as usual.

Any thoughts.

Cheers
Geordie

Raff isn't sure what he is, sometimes he thinks he is mole because he tries to bury himself into everything, including my dinner :?

Is he being more vigorous with his bath? Some of my birds barely get wet, while others bathe until they are drenched--maybe he is just getting wetter.

Aye, he goes crazy in the water and will often have 2 baths off the trot, totaling about 6-8 a day, he doesn't just flutter around in the water either, he will totally submerge himself. I wonder if he thinks he is a fish...

He loves it when I drop an ice cube in the water also, he can't seem to figure out why it disappears and will continue looking for it.

i had a duck like this. you know how they are waterproof, they'll get wet on the outside but the skin stays dry? well this one duck would absolutely get soaked when ever she wet, she would then get waterlogged and start sinking in the pond !! i don't know if it an oil gland problem (on the duck or your finch), so i can't help with that, just make sure he doesn't get waterlogged :D
